Effects of Water Pollution on Freshwater Mycoflora
Tan, T. K.
Abstract
Waterways in Singapore are polluted by wastes from industries, households and rural farms. The effects of such pollution on the mycoflora of 2 sites, one more polluted than the other, was studied. The degree of pollution was determined by the dissolved oxygen, 4-hour permanganate and biochemical oxygen demand tests. Fungi were isolated from water, sediment and debris by serial dilution and plating, debris-plating and baiting. A total of 31 species from 22 genera were obtained. Although the 2 sites were part of the same waterway, severe pollution at one site after damming has reduced the diversity and size of its mycoflora. The more polluted site was characterised by an absence of the Mastigomycetes, and a predominance of Candida tropicalis, Pullularia pullulans, Rhodatorula glutinis and yeast-like fungi Acremonium, Ccphalosporium and Geotrichum candidum. The mycoflora of both sites are compared and discussed.
